Top-Songs-2014

As the year winds down to a close, the ‘Best of 2014′ lists are popping up everywhere, but none of those lists have the opinions of your favourite KiSS 92.5 DJs!

Check out our KiSS DJs picks for ‘Top 5 Songs of 2014′…

Mocha

The Roz & Mocha Show: 5:30am – 9am

5. MAGIC!  ’Rude’

Man, who knew this song was gonna become a WORLD WIDE smash? No matter where I went, I heard this song! I loved watching celebs sing along to it at award shows too, it just goes to show how catchy a tune can get.

4. Ariana Grande ‘Problem’ feat Iggy Azalea

From the first time I heard this track, it totally reminded me of 90’s R&B, which is one of my favourite eras of music. Ariana killed it with this one!

3. Chris Brown ‘Loyal’ feat Lil’ Wayne & French Montana

The absolute BEST R&B song of the year! Great vocals, production is crazy and the addition of Wayne & French Montana give the song an added boost. I’ve been in clubs in Vegas this year and EVERYONE was singing this song!

2. Drake ’0 To 100 / The Catch Up’

Originally released as a freestyle, this song took the streets by storm! It’s gritty, raw and straight up Hip-Hop from Drizzy!

1. DJ Snake & Lil Jon ‘Turn Down For What’

This will go down as a CLASSIC party anthem! It’s the ultimate hype song and guaranteed to amp you up no matter what!

Damnit Maurie

The Roz & Mocha Show: 5:30am – 9am

5. Calvin Harris ‘Summer’

Look, its a good song…I just find him so damn sexy that he deserves to be on this list! Did you see him shirtless doing the ice bucket thing? I wish I was the cubes.

4. Jason Derulo ‘Talk Dirty’

Such a cool track for everyone, and I LOVE the mix of dance beats with the saxophone…that was a sax right? So saxxy… :p You know its a good song when you can still hear it now, and you’re not tired of it!

3. Meghan Trainor ‘All About That Bass’

I just love the message in this song! Love who you are, what you look like, and don’t let magazines or other people make you feel any less attractive. I like how this song became an anthem for a generation of photoshop and an unrealistic norm that not everyone can live up to. I ain’t no size two either honey…who the F*CK is?!

2. Magic ‘Rude’

Who was the girl and did he marry her anyway? One of the cutest things for me this year was watching my little brothers Daniel & Kyle sing this song in the car, they knew every word. Totally a fun song that you just can’t help but love! Do you find your self in any situation now singing under your breath to your boss or coworker “why you gotta be so rude” ? :) This also gets my vote for song of the summer!

1. Sam Smith ‘Stay With Me’

I really feel this was 2014′s anthem for anyone! It’s been so long since we’ve had a good song that really came from the heart. I truly love this song and adore Sam Smith. And really, is anyone good at the one night stand? All he wanted was love, and now the entire world loves him!

DJ Clymaxxx

The Roz & Mocha Mixxx | Set It Off: Fridays 8am | Saturdays 8pm

5. Chris Brown ‘Loyal’ feat Lil Wayne & French Montana

4. Jason Derulo ‘Talk Dirty’

3. Sam Smith ‘Stay With Me’

2. Iggy Azalea ‘Fancy’ feat Charli XCX

1. Ariana Grande ‘Problem’ feat Iggy Azalea

Taylor Kaye

9:00am – 2pm

5. Taylor Swift ‘Shake it Off’

4. Pharrell Williams ‘Happy’

3. Sia ‘Chandelier’

2. Meghan Trainor ‘All About That Bass’

1. Sam Smith ‘Stay With Me’

Blake Carter

Blake & Wylde: 2pm – 7pm

5. Taylor Swift ‘Blank Space’

4. Lil John and the 1 million other people on the track ‘Turn Down For What’

3. Katy Perry ‘Dark Horse’ feat Juicy J

2. Kongos ‘Come With Me Now’

1. Hozier ‘Take Me To Church’

Adam Wylde

Blake & Wylde: 2pm – 7pm

5. Deadmau5 ‘Seeya’

4. Tove Lo ‘Habits (Stay High)’

3. Kongos ‘Come With Me Now’

2. Taylor Swift ‘Blank Space’

1. Mark Ronson & Bruno Mars ‘Uptown Funk’

Devo Brown

Evenings and Weekends

For me the top songs are the ones that impacted radio/tv/clubs/online the most, and just our lifestyles in general. That being said…2014 has been the hardest to pick a Top 5!

5. John Legend ‘All Of Me’

Every year there is one ultimate love song – this is that song. Heard at every wedding, every ‘I’m sorry I messed up – please take me back” situation & every radio station. The song was #2 for a long time before finally dethroning ‘Happy’ from the #1 spot.

4. Drake ’0-100 / The Catch Up’

Gotta give some love to my dude Aubrey! Drake’s impact on hip hop & mainstream music and it’s culture (the lint roller memes were awesome!) was re-ignited with this track. From dance floors to sports teams using this as their intro, the song definitely earned the 2 Grammys it’s been nominated for.

3. Pharrell Williams ‘Happy’

Yes, it was released in late 2013 – but made it’s rise and dominance in 2014. The song is probably the most socially impactful one of the year. For that reason it has peaked at #1 in 24 countries – including 10 consecutive weeks at #1 in North America. Annnd all the parody/lip dub video – massive!

2. MAGIC! ‘Rude’

The Toronto band had a massive hit with this catchy tune. Time Magazine said it’s the worst song of the year – but you can’t deny the likability of the reggae influenced rhythm and easy singalong lyrics. The song – love it or hate it – was massive this year and spent 6 straight weeks at #1 this summer.

1. Taylor Swift ‘Shake It Off’

This was a tough decision. While songs like ‘Fancy’ & ‘All About That Bass’ spent more time at the number 1 spot – this song (& Taylor Swift) was the one that impacted mainstream music the most. It debuted at #1 – only 22 songs in history have done that. Taylor’s 1989 album sold over 1million in it’s first week, she’s Billboard’s Woman Of The Year, she broke a ton of musical records this year and even bumped herself out of the #1 spot! (Blank Space booted Shake It Off) Shake It Off is up for 3 Grammys this year – it’s hard to argue that Taylor doesn’t deserve the #1 spot.

Shem

Evenings and Weekends

5. One Direction ‘Steal My Girl’

4. Bobby Schmurda ‘Hot Boy’

3. Sam Smith ‘Money on my Mind’

2. Taylor Swift ‘Blank Space’

1. Mark Robson & Bruno Mars ’Uptown Funk’

That’s how the song goes… Right?

Our very own Blake Carter and her terrible sleeping patterns helped crack the mystery behind the crazy success of Uptown Funk by Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars!!!

Blake was singing her favourite (and everyone’s favourite) hip hop song, All Gold Everything by Trinidad James, but soon found herself singing Uptown Funk… WHY you ask?!?!? Because they’re BASICALLY the same song. Oh yeah, and Trinidad James co-wrote it!!! Who knew?!?!?!

tumblr_mdtbd2u9LZ1qlw3djo1_500

Trinidad James must be behind the video too because in both videos, they’re coolin’ with their squad, ya’feel? (Is that what the kids are saying these days?)

tumblr_me2wylxocu1rv8logo1_500

But honestly, what a genius idea! Turning a trap song in a funk song you can ACTUALLY play on the radio? I bet Trinidad James is loving the royalty cheques on this one.

Mark Ronson won big at the 58th GRAMMY Awards, taking home the gramophones for ‘Record of the Year’ and ‘Best Pop Duo / Group Performance’ for ‘Uptown Funk’ with Bruno Mars!

Moments after, we caught up with him backstage in the GRAMMYs press room to get his reaction!

“I think that that song really came out of a moment of pure joy, like us jamming in a room, playing the music that…we loved the most… When you’re like jamming with dudes who you love and you respect so much and you’re just in this mood, something joyous can just come out.”

“You never really know until you put it out there,” he told us. “We worked so hard and because we’re all really tough critics of our own music… You know, there were some heated debates and arguments so when we finally got it done then at least we were proud of it. I’m not gonna say we knew it was gonna be a hit, but we knew we were excited and couldn’t wait to play it for people.”

He added, “I will never write anything as good as ‘Uptown Funk,’ I can tell you right now.”

Saturday Night Live announced that Mark Ronson and Miley Cyrus will be their musical guests on December 15, and so you think to yourself, “why would they perform together if they don’t …” and then you realize something – Mark and Miley are making music together!

Following SNL’s announcement, Miley, who swiped her entire Instagram page back in July, posted a snippet from her collaboration with Mark called ‘Nothing Breaks Like A Heart.’

And on Twitter, Mark tweeted, “The heartbreak era is coming … sooner than you think!”

In a way, we knew some magic was about to be made because in June, Mark posted this selfie with Miley and wrote, “I don’t even know if this pic is real or fake because I was so busy giving strong JEW STEEL to the camera, I was unaware of who was to my left or right. All I know is, the girl in this snap helped me write one of my favourite songs. Coming soon x.”

The good news keeps on coming … Mark is coming out with a brand new album! It’ll be the follow-up to ‘Uptown Special’ which Mark dropped back in 2015 and his new album will feature new artists by the names of Yebba and King Princess.  In a recent interview with BBC, Mark explained that his new album will feature a full list of ‘sad bangers’ (which is in response to his divorce that took place last year to his then wife, actress Josephine de La Baum.  Mark says his new album can be described as ‘country-tinged’ and ‘futuristic.’

Mark and Miley’s song will drop TOMORROW AT 7PM EST!

Mark Ronson teamed up with Miley Cyrus for a brand new song! It’s called Nothing Breaks Like a Heart.

The song is off Mark’s upcoming album of “sad bangers” it doesn’t have a title yet though.

It’s definitely got a country sort of feel to it which Mark said wasn’t intentional.

He says, “I heard the drawl in her voice and the twang when I saw her live on ‘SNL’. My jaw dropped and I became super-fixated about being able to work with her.” He also said,  “But we weren’t trying to make a Western song. I think with Miley, just the way she wrote the verses and the way the melody came out, came naturally.”

The reactions to the song are everything:

Go take a listen! It’s a jam! Oh and – Mark Ronson and Miley Cyrus will be performing together on Saturday Night Live Dec.15th with Matt Damon hosting!

My girl Miley Cyrus can SING! Either live or in a studio, country or pop, she has such an amazing voice!

One super lucky London crowd got a huge surprise when Miley Cyrus walked on stage to perform alongside Mark Ronson.  Together, they performed their latest hit, ‘Nothing Breaks Like a Heart.”

Billboard explains, “Ronson brought Cyrus to the stage to sing along with the recorded backing tracking, but Cyrus took control: she started belting out the single a cappella while encouraging her fans to join her.  She made it through a few verses before Ronson grabbed a guitar and started picking along, and the crowd sang every words back to them.”

HUGE congrats goes to Mark who is now nominated for three GRAMMY awards.  Two nominations for ‘Shallow,’ a song he and Lady Gaga co-wrote and another for ‘Electricity,’ a multi collaboration with Dua Lipa and Diplo.

And earlier this week, both Miley and Mark appeared on The Graham Norton Show where Mark explained he stalked Miley for years for a collaboration, “I got her number; I don’t know if I was legal or not.  I started texting her.  I just said, ‘Hey, if you ever want to make some music’ … four days went by, nothing.”  Miley says she wouldn’t have had it any other way, “Any time before this would have not been right, and any time after this would have been too far away.  I think it’s perfect timing with this song, at the time that it’s out in the world.”

And watch Miley and Mark perform their latest on The Graham Norton Show below.

In one of the teaser videos posted by Miley, Matt, Mark, SNL cast member Beck Bennett and Cecily Strong all sit around a super decorated Studio 8H stage where they exchange Christmas gifts during the traditional Secret Santa, or in Matt’s case, his favourite day of the year.  While Mark is gifted a turkey sandwich from Beck, Miley receives a diamond necklace from Matt, “Matt this is way too much, you said we were keeping it modest this year,” Miley says.  Matt’s reply – “I know I got carried away, I just love Secret Santa” #LOL.  And what does Matt get? A scarf that’s not even finished.

AND – there’s one more thing! While on the Howard Stern show, Miley confirmed that Sean Ono Lennon will join her and Mark on SNL and all three will perform the John Lennon / Yoko Ono Christmas classic, ‘Happy Xmas (War Is Over).’  Miley says, “It’s just so magic every time we sing it…goosebumps all over the place.”
